Ceramic tiles are non toxic, do not harbour dust or other allegens, durable and easy to clean and maintain.

Floor Tiles

Ceramic floor tiles are generally produced in either a glazed, semiglazed, unglazed or polished finished.

Glazed & Semiglazed floor files

A ceramic coating is kiln fired onto glazed tiles, thus achieving their colour and gloss type surface. It is important to select a glazed tile according to the the level of wear of the area that it is to be applied.

The durability of the surface Is rated by the manufacturer in accordance with industry standards by surface abrasion testing. Products are then classified usually by a PEI rating number for use in light , medium and heavy traffic areas and commercial areas. It is important to match the "wear rating" qualifies of the file to the requirements of your floor when making your selection.

Unglazed tiles

Unglazed and porcelain stoneware tiles derive their colour from the materials used to make up the body of the tile, coloured throughout minimising the effects of long term wear and tear. Unglazed fully vitrified tiles have very low water absorption, are extremely durable, chemical and frost resistant and are suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Unglazed tiles are extremely hard and do not chip easily.

Unglazed porcelain tiles are also produced in a polished finish by several manufacturers. The slip resistant properties vary from the unglazed variety. Ask your tile retailer for advice regarding suitable areas for use and maintenance.

Other points to consider

The higher the probability of your floor being exposed to water, the higher your need for a slip resistant floor tile. When slip resistance is required ask for technical information or assistance from your tile supplier.For outdoor installations select a durable, frost resistant tile with the appropriate slip resistance.

When remodelling, it is important to consider the thickness of the tile you intend to use. How will it effect the existing cabinets, doors etc. and floor levels from room to room? Discuss this with your tiler.

When purchasing your tiles allow from 5 to 10% for waste and cutting and check the shade number on each carton to ensure that you have received one batch. Ensure that you order sufficienf quantity to finish your job. If you need more tiles, ensure that you take an empty carton to your tile supplier so they can try to match the shade.

Wall Tiles

Ceramic wall tiles are generally available in glazed finishes, full gloss and matt. Wall tiles are produced in a large range of sizes and a spectrum of colours and designs.

Floor tiles can also be used on the wall, but take Into consideration the thickness of the tile, suitability for the area, joint spaces and if the surface will be easy to clean..

Decorative feature wall tiles and accessories are available to complement a plain body tile.

Consider the size of your room, generally using light colours makes a room appear larger. Try to minimize the cutting in small areas eg. when tiling between cupboards and benchs, consider the area you have and select a suitable size to minimise the cut pieces.

If you have exposed edges, how will they be finished off? Will you require trim pieces?

Some highly decorative tile surfaces and glazes can be harmed by the use of abrasive cleaners and strong chemicals. Your tile supplier will advise you regarding this.

Variations in shade and pattern can occur in kiln fired products so it is important that you mix the contents of the cartons for an acceptable blend of colour.

Design theme

Identify your requirements. Consider if your tile selection will co-ordinate with existing surroundings. If possible, prepare a brief for your project by collecting pictures from magazines, paint colours, fabric colours etc. as this will assist you when selecting you tiles.
