The Kitchen

This is undoubtedly one of the most important rooms in the home. The kitchen often becomes the central hub of activity and family life, and should therefore have the most pleasant outlook and aspect of all. Whilst often it is necessary for the kitchen to overlook outside play areas, if there is any chance of an additional view as well, make the effort to obtain it for this area.

The kitchen should also overlook the family and meals area. The kitchen design should have adequate bench space for entertaining as well as everyday cooking. The refrigerator, cook top, wall oven and sink should be positioned so as to provide the best workability for the kitchen design. They are best positioned opposite each other, in the form of an equilateral triangle. Pantries are exceptionally handy, and should be as large as possible. Appliances should be reliable, quality brand names, as they last for many years.

The range hood should suit your type of cooking, and if you do a lot of fast frying or wok cooking then it should vent directly to the outside. It is best to have a preparation space on either side of the sink and the cooktop.

Wall oven or under bench oven, the choice is yours. A wall oven should be positioned at the correct height for easy access. Microwaves are normally positioned over wall ovens, with a pot drawer under and perhaps a small set of cupboards above.

The doors and the finish of the bench top are important, as they are not easily replaced. Be sure your kitchen has good natural lighting and ventilation, as well as adequate power points and artificial lighting. The kitchen is usually the busiest and most important work and preparation area in the entire home.
