BLINDS

What's best for your room? Your sense of style? Your children, your privacy, your peace of mind? If you own an Oriental rug, mahogany credenza, or any furnishing of value that you want to protect from the sun's harsh ultraviolet rays, you'll want to think about what's best for them, too. And this is just the short list of considerations.

Consider Your Space

Firstly you should consider your space. A rooms dimensions, colours, its exposure to natural lighting, and, of course what you use it for, all impact the type of covering that works best in the space.

When looking at a rooms dimensions, the size and shape of your room is obviously an important consideration when selecting a window fashion.

Some basic guidelines to keep in mind are, that vertical window fashions such as Vertical blinds, Curtains, LUMINETTE Privacy Sheers and vertically striped fabrics can add height and dignity to a room, while horizontal ones such as Roman Blinds, Venetian Blinds, Timber Shutters, Cellular Shades and Louvred sheer shades such as SILHOUETTE Shadings often suggest relaxation and informality. Also, fabric window shadings with gentle folds can counterbalance the rigid lines of a room's design, especially if the room features boxy window grids and mouldings.

Colour also plays a big role in determining the mood in a room. As a guide, allow your main colour to occupy 75% of a room, including floor and wall space, with 15 to 20% for your secondary colour and 10% for an accent colour.

To visually expand a room, keep the colour contrast between wall and window low. To make a room feel cosier, create a high contrast.

As a general rule, use neutral and pastel-coloured window treatments when you want other furnishings"a prized painting, say, or sofa, to make bold statements. Also, neutral and pastel colours not only invoke a sense of calm, but create an illusion of height. Conversely, bold colours play down a room's loft. Select bold colours for your window treatments if you want them to be the room's coordinating feature or its chief attraction.
