TYPES OF SYSTEMS

How to operate a Refrigerated Air Conditioner Efficiently

1 . When a hot day is expected, use energy management techniques to delay switching on the air conditioner.

These include:

  • Keeping windows and external doors shut;
  • Lowering external blinds or awnings, and drawing internal blinds and curtains;
  • closing any internal doors which lead to rooms likely to become overheated (such as a sleep-out or unprotected sun room).

2. At the end of a hot day wait until the outside temperature is lower than inside (test it with a thermometer) before opening windows and outside doors.

3. In winter, with reverse cycle heating, draw the curtains before it gets dark to help retain the heater's warmth.

4. Setting the thermostat at 25C to 26C for cooling in summer and 19C to 20C for heating in winter will provide comfortable conditions and also reduce energy consumption. The high speed fan setting is only necessary to speed up the cooling when the unit is first switched on or in extreme conditions. The low speed setting ensures adequate performance and is quieter.

5. Fireplaces not in use should be sealed off.

6. If the machine has adjustable louvers they should be directed between horizontal and vertical positions when cooling. When heating, it may be better to direct the air flow towards the floor.

7. Air conditioners need regular maintenance (although there may not be much work required). The filter will need cleaning at intervals varying from weekly to monthly, depending upon conditions and amount of use. With some models, the fan motor bearing may need oiling occasionally. Belt drives will need belt adjustment. Wall and fascia models are sealed units and like your refrigerator do not loose refrigerant. Split units which are connected with pipes will loose a little refrigerant and will need to be recharged by the installer about once a year. It pays to invest in an annual maintenance programme. Always read the manufacturer's instructions carefully and follow them exactly.

8. Wherever possible, locate air conditioner on the shady side of the building for optimum summer performance.

9. The use of insulation, particularly in the ceiling; and blinds, awnings or shutters for windows will reduce heat transfer into or out of the house and reduce operating costs.

10. Water being displaced from units may be directed into a garden area.
