A timber staircase would be the most popular selection of all. However there is an enormous selection of components and materials. A staircase manufacturer can supply brochures and technical information to help narrow down your choice. Timber staircases can be painted, stained, carpeted and even tiled to change the appearance.

A few precautions need to be taken when choosing your timber staircase.

  • Always make sure the treads and risers are fixed in with glue blocks, wedges, nails or screws

  • A newel post should always be mortised and tenoned onto the stringer to ensure rigidity and long life.

Timber Selections

This choice can be hard due to the wide variety of timbers. Most standard materials in a staircase would be plantation grown pine, manufactured medium density fibre board (MDF) and Meranti.

Other timbers include:

  • Brush Box
  • Black Butt
  • Tasmanian Oak
  • Kauri Pine
  • Kalantas
  • Mahogany
  • Blue Gum - and the list can go on considerably.

Always keep in mind that the timber needs to be durable. For example cedar treads may damage easily so a comparative timber can be used. Timber varies greatly in price and this can affect the overall cost significantly.

An ever increasing market for staircases is the use of recycled timber which can give your staircase a whole new look. Recycled timber is one of the highest grades of timber you can get, and the size and quality of some timbers can never be matched again.

Choosing the material for your staircase needs some careful consideration and your staircase manufacturer will give you expert advise.

Woodturning & Balustrading

Choosing a woodturning can be a very difficult decision due to the fact that there are endless choices. All staircase manufacturers can help greatly to narrow your selection by providing their standard woodturnings which can range around 3-7 turnings.

If you have a particular design in mind or need to match an existing turning your staircase manufacturer can easily help you.

Curved Staircases

A curved staircase is one of the most prestigious stairs that can be made. This type of staircase can be made from various materials but mainly timber. Curved staircases take much longer to manufacture with most stair components cut by hand or laminated.

A curved staircase is very individual in appearance with most entries being on a more grand scale to enhance the staircase.
