Step 1

Calculate How Much Panelling Will Be Needed.

1. Vertical or Horizontal

Each board has a designated cover - for example, boards of PSN2.6 Channel 2 profile, when installed will each give a cover of 133mm. Thus if a wall, 3.9m length x 2.4m height, is to be covered with vertical boards, then divide the coverage dimension into the wall length, viz. 3900 divided by 133 = 29.32 or rounded off, 30 boards 2.4m long are required. Similarly, if boards are to be fixed horizontally to a 2.7m high wall 3.6m long, then 2700 divided by 133 = 20.30 or 21 boards 3.6m long are required.

2. Diagonal Panelling

To calculate quantity for a 45 diagonal application - take the vertical height of the wall and multiply by 1.5 for diagonal laid board length. Imagine that the boards are either horizontal or vertical, and using the above method calculate the lineal metres needed to cover the area. Now add 12 % to this lineal figure and divide the final figure by the previously calculated diagonal board length - this gives the number of boards needed for diagonal installation.

  1. 2.4m height x 1.5 - 3.6m diagonal length.
  2. . Imagine boards horizontal to assess lineal needed: 2400 133 = 18.045 boards x 4.2m = 75.79 lineal metres.
  3. Add 12 % for diagonal, 75.79 x 1.125 = 85.26 lineal metres.
  4. 85.16m 3.6m = 23.68 boards, round off to 24.
  5. Thus for diagonal installation 24 boards at 3.6m long are required.

Note C- Packaging

Some timber panellings are pre-packaged in plastic shrink wrap to protect the product and to make purchasing and handling easier. All timber species are available in lengths ranging from 0.6m up to 4.8m (in increments of 0.3m) with some species such as Western Red Cedar being available in longer lengths up to 6.0m. All 10mm thick panellings are wrapped with 8 boards per bundle, with 12mm thickness in 4 boards per bundle. When ordering panelling try and keep to even bundles wherever possible as loose boards are liable to damage in delivery and handling.

For example, in the calculation shown above in 1. Vertical or Horizontal, 30 boards would be required for a vertical wall 3.9m long x 2.4m high. Thus, for Western Red Cedar PSN2.6 profile which is 10mm thick, you should order 4 bundles x 2.4m long or 32 boards (the extra boards are handy insurance against mistakes in measuring and cutting).
