Do-it-yourself in 8 simple steps

The only tools you will need are:-
Shovel - Rule - Spirit level - Wooden float.

Step 1.
Dig your trench approximately 150mm (6") deep and about 250mm (10") wide and leave the base of the trench uneven.

Step 2.
Fill your trench with a concrete mix (bags of premix concrete are suitable) The thickness of your mixture should be approximately 75mm (3").

Step 3.
Screed and firm your mix, using a float, to a true level A spirit level should be used.

Step 4.
Press blocks firmly into base - ensure a spacing of 200mm (8") between blocks in the case of straight walls.

Step 5.
Use a spirit level to ensure that your bottom or 1st course is level. Please note: After completing Step 5 you will have constructed a solid base from which the rest of your Terrace Garden Wall can grow. However, before moving onto step 6 it is advisable to allow a couple of hours for the concrete mix in YOUR BASE to harden.

Step 6.
Shovel soil into and behind your bottom course of blocks. The soil used should not be too sandy otherwise it will be unsuitable for growing plants and it will be likely to pour out the face of the wall when dry. Don't use clay or a clay-like soil. Also you must compact the soil behind the bottom course. Take care not to dislodge the blocks.

Step 7.
Lay your second course of blocks. As you fill this course and proceeding courses with soil remember to compact the soil behind each and every course.

Step 8.
The final, most rewarding step is the placing of your favourite plants in your completed wall.

Note:
Engineering design is required if the Terrace Garden Block Wall is to be constructed more than 9 courses high.
