Orbital sanders

An orbital sander has a rectangular sanding base which oscillates parallel to the processed surface

  • Ideal for flat surfaces
  • Single or two handed grip
  • Small, intricate, detail sanding

Multi Sanders

A multi sander is a combination of an orbital, detail & random orbital sander in the one unit.

This is achieved by using the same body/motor configuration but having different base plates to attach to the machine.

Random Orbital Sanders

These machines are ideal for people who have limited storage space but on occasions require the need for more than one type of sander. A belt sander is known for fast removal of material and is the most aggressive of the sanders.

Belt Sanders

A belt sander has a drive wheel that allows the continuous sanding belt to rotate at high speed.

The belt sander action is to" pull away from the user this takes some effort to control.

The power range of belt sanders can vary from 500 to 1500w

  • Ideal for large flat surfaces
  • Two handed grip
  • Fastest material removal

Orbital Sanders

An orbital sander, also known as a finishing sander is a power tool designed mainly for fine surface sanding of various materials.

They are typically powered at between 115 to 250w

An orbital sander has a rectangular sanding base which oscillates parallel to the processed surface.

  • Ideal for flat surfaces
  • Single or two handed grip
  • Faster material removal than detail

A detail sander also has an orbital action and is designed for fine surface sanding of small & intricate areas.

They are typically powered at between 115 to 200w

Hints and Safety Tips

ALWAYS

  • Wear approved safety equipment
    • e.g. Dust Mask, Ear Muffs & Goggles/Glasses
  • Avoid sanding plaster walls due to very fine dust
  • Operate in a well ventilated area
  • Regularly check condition of the paper
  • Do not apply excessive pressure onto the tool
  • Remember that orbital sanders leave fine swirl marks
  • Clamp work where possible
  • Use the dust bag or some form of dust extraction
  • Only use correct sized paper
  • Keep belt sanders moving to avoid trenching
