The shape of a lot will influence whether the home can be positioned to maximise its solar access (the amount of sunshine available to assist with the heating of a building). As you can see in the diagram below, simple shaped lots maximise the solar access.

Simple shaped lots maximise the solar access. You need to identify where true solar North is, as it differs from magnetic or compass north. True solar north varies from magnetic north depending on the location. In Sydney, for example, magnetic north is approximately 12 degrees east of true solar north.
