SELECTING A WASHING MACHINE

The initial decision is whether to purchase a top loading or front loading machine. Currently 90% of consumers prefer top loaders.

    Top Loaders

    * Larger capacity (up to 7.5kg)

    * Ideal for families

    * Larger capacity means less wash loads per week

    * Shorter wash cycles (generally around 40 minutes)

    * Cycle can be interrupted

      Front Loaders

      * Smaller capacity, generally 5kg

      * Ideal for small laundries

      * Clothes dryer can be stacked on top

      * Excellent energy ratings and water efficiency

    Australian Made or Imported?

    Australian made top loading washing machines are equal to if not better than overseas products. Be sure to ask if the company is also Australian owned. Europeans favour front loaders and thus the majority of front load washing machines are European. Again, ask where they are made because quality can vary.

    What capacity should I buy?

    Washing machines range in size from a 4.5kg capacity up to 7.5kg capacity

    Singles/Couples

    A small washing machine with either a 4.5kg or 5kg capacity will be sufficient

    Three People/Small Family

    A mid-size top loader would be ideal. Look for one with either a 6kg or 6.5kg capacity. The extra money spent will mean less time spent doing the washing.

    Four people & Average to Large Family

    Invest in a large top loader with either a 7kg or 7.5kg capacity. The 7.5kg washers have more features and also achieve better energy ratings and lower water consumption.

    Service

    Does the company have an Australian wide service network? How long has the company been in operation?

    Warranty

    Is the warranty a full warranty or does it only cover certain parts of the machine? Your new washing machine should be covered by a full 2 years free labour and parts warranty.

    Environmentally Friendly

    Check the water consumption. Demand a AA or AAA water rating and ensure your new washer has at least a 3 star energy rating.

    Quiet Washing

    Many Australian made washing machines are now extremely quiet.

    Out of Balance Loads

    Check the stability of the agitator - give it a shake. The firmer the agitator the less likely it is to go out of balance.
