General movement areas that are used for transit purposes. Functional lighting is needed for visual performance and comfort.

Lighting Solution

These zones need special attention as far as the lighting is concerned, for it is here that many accidents occur. It is a matter of providing ample, glare-free lighting, with the right shadow effects. In the entrance hall, a welcoming atmosphere is also very important. In general, lighting any special features (e.g. pictures, tapestries, sculptures) is more effective than overall general lighting.

Lighting in these places tends to be used for long periods. Hence, Ecotone energy-savers can be used wherever possible. They use less electricity and last much, much longer - which saves you getting the stepladder out. Wall or ceiling fittings are very practical in the hall, often a very busy thoroughfare for all the family, and moving lighting out of harm's way is a practical and attractive solution.

A bright pool of light on the floor at the end of a corridor or hallway will have a welcoming effect, as the eye is naturally drawn to brighter areas. Stairs require good, even lighting to ensure that every step is clearly illuminated. Remember to make the stair lighting brighter than the hallway below. Avoid spotlights on stairways as they can cause dangerous shadows. Landings also need a good quality overall light. Young children often find a landing light left on all night very reassuring - so an energy-saver is a wise choice.

It all adds up to a design that is welcoming, reassuring and safe. Lighting these areas of our home is often neglected.
