Fixing Sheets

Prior to fixing ensure that all joints will be supported by a framing member. Plan sheet layouts so that wherever possible, straight joints are formed using two recessed edges.

Sheets must be fixed to the frame leaving a 2-3mm gap between each sheet. This gap is important to accommodate movement of the building materials.

Internal corners must be fixed leaving a 3-5mm gap between sheets, and filled with flexible sealant. External corners must be fixed flush.

Avoid butt joints over doorways and windows. Where these are unavoidable, they must be positioned a minimum of 200mm from jamb studs, and formed on a stud.

Position fasteners at maximum 200mm centres along framing members at sheet edges and in the body of the sheet. Fasteners must be positioned a minimum of 12mm from all edges of sheets and minimum 50mm from corners.

Horizontal Fixing of Sheets to Framing

Fastener heads must be driven flush with the sheet surface. Hot rolled steel structural sections must be battened out with timber or steel battens before sheets are fastened. Sheets must not be fastened directly to hot rolled steel sections.

Footings

When finishing at footings sheets must overlap footings a minimum of 50mm and must be kept clear of the ground a minimum of 100mm to prevent moisture entering behind the sheet.

Junction at Building Additions

When an existing building adjoins a new addition, an allowance for movement must be provided in the joint.

Junction With Masonary Wall

When masonry walls adjoin framed construction a control joint must be installed to allow for differential movement.

Control joints should be constructed as illustrated using 9mm diameter backing rod and flexible sealant.

Control Joints

Control joints are to be provided in walls at maximum 7.2 metres spacing. Control joints are to be constructed with a double stud allowing for expansion and contraction through both the framing and the cladding as shown below.

Two Storey Construction

Horizontal movement joints or relief joints must be provided in two storey construction to allow for the shrinkage that can occur when deep timber floor joists are used. Architectural profiles may be used to cover this joint.

Jointing & Coating Systems.

It is recommended that a proprietary jointing and coating system be used, and installed by a manufacturer approved coatings applicator.

Dulux Acra-Tex, Taubmans Armawall and Wattyl Granosite jointing and coating systems are recommended. Other systems that have been appraised by ABSAC or BRANZ may also be used.

Details shown here are indicative of such systems, however the manufacturer's instructions should be followed.

Coating Systems

A range of texture coatings are available to complete the system. Higher profile finishes are recommended as they minimise the possibility of joints showing.

The imaginative use of colour and texture plus the addition of some architectural profiles enables many different and attractive styles to be created.

Straight Joints - 2 to 3mm gap, sheet recesses filled with proprietary jointing compounds and reinforced with fibreglass mesh tape.

External Corners - Fill any gaps with sealant. PVC external corner bead (as recommended by coating manufacturer) is fixed and taped down both sides. Tape should not wrap all the way around the corner. Corner is set with jointing compound.

Specialist Profiles.

Preformed architectural profiles may be used to create a feature around window openings, doorways and the like. These lightweight shapes can be installed quickly, easily and at an affordable price.

With shapes and styles to suit any application, design flexibility is unlimited, giving you the opportunity to add an individual expression of style to every home.

These profiles should be securely bonded to Fibre Cement Texture Base Sheet in accordance with the jointing and coating manufacturer's instructions.

Corbelling and Projecting Sills provide effective highlighting for windows and eaves.

Decorative Quoining to accentuate a stylish wall and doorway.
