Glossary of Terms

  • Accelerator - An ad-mixture to hasten the setting action of plaster. Not generally recommended.

  • Accessories - Metal or plastic beads, trim, or moulding used to protect or conceal corners, edges or abutments of the gypsum board construction.

  • Adhesive Bond - Two materials in contact with each other causing them to adhere by means other than cohesion.

  • Arch - The curved part of a structure spanning an opening.

  • Base-Coat - Any plaster coats applied prior to application of finish coats.

  • Bonding Agent - A substance applied to a surface to improve the quality of the bond.

  • Casts - Finished produced from a mould.

  • Casing/Capping Bead - A bead used at the perimeter of a plaster membrane or around openings to provide a stop and to provide separation from adjacent materials.

  • Caulk - A) Material used to fill a joint. B) Also used to describe a joint sealing material applied in a plastic state.

  • Coat - A thickness, covering or layer of plaster applied in a single operation.

  • Corner Bead - A metal bead used at projecting or external corners to define and reinforce the corner.

  • Cornice - A projecting moulding at or near the top of the wall.

  • Critical Lighting - Strong sidelighting from windows or surface-mounted light fixtures.

  • Dry-Out - A condition occasionally occurring in gypsum plaster, which by excessive evaporation or suction has lost some or all of the water necessary for crystallisation.

  • Furring - Timber or metal strips used to even up a surface, e.g. on to a wall or ceiling to provide a true surface to which plasterboard can be fixed.

  • Joint Photographing - The shadowing of the finished joint areas through the surface decoration.

  • Jointing Compounds - Can be air drying on plaster based chemically setting types. Also known as setting or bedding compounds.

  • Primer/Sealer - A paint material formulated to fill the pores and equalise the suction difference between gypsum board surface paper and the compound used on finished joints, angles, fastener heads and accessories and over skim coatings. See "comments" section of this document.

  • Setting/Stopping/Flushing - Applying plaster finish.

  • Shoulder - Junction between taper and main surface in recess edge board.

  • Skim Coat - A term denoting a thin finish coat, trowelled to a smooth finish. A thin coat of joint compound over the entire surface to fill imperfections in the joint work, smooth the paper texture and provide a uniform surface for decorating.

  • Spotting - To cover fastener heads with joint compound.

  • Stopping Bead - Bead with applied paster finish - arch, external, stopping, shadow line.

  • Texture - A decorative treatment of gypsum board surfaces.

  • Texturing - Regular or irregular patterns typically produced by applying a mixture of joint compound and water, or proprietary texture materials including latex base texture paint to a gypsum board surface previously coated with primer sealer.
