The Jigsaw is a versatile power tool for cutting almost unlimited shapes into various materials by simply selecting the right blade accessory and speed. The saw blade which is positioned at a right angle to the motor shaft performs a straight or orbital stroke motion. They come in 2 different handle configurations, D Handle and Barrel Grip . Though not common they are also available in cordless which is more typical of a professional application

What to look for when buying a jigsaw

Strokes/Min & Stroke Length

Though not as commonly referred to, the Stroke per minute and Stroke length ratings can be a very important factor to professional

Strokes/min (SPM)

The higher this value the faster the Jigsaw will cut through the material. A typical SPM rating would be 0 -3200spm

Stroke Length

This is the distance the blade travels from the minimum point to the full extension of the stroke. It is this distance and the length of the blade used that will provide the actual cutting depth. This length averages around 25mm

Pendulum or Orbital Action

This feature provides an oscillating action to move the blade in a slight circular motion as the blade moves forward on the upwards stroke. This is the same direction as the teeth cut in to provide a more aggressive and faster cut.

There are typically 2 or 3 settings plus a 0 setting for straight cutting which is recommended for metal & thin materials with the orbital settings for the fast straight cuts such as ripping excess material. The higher the orbital setting the rougher the resulting finish.

What to Think About

What materials will it be cutting?

Type of handle configuration?

Are they replacing an old jigsaw (blade fitment)

Maximum cutting depths?

Is weight or physical size a factor?

Is it for professional or home handyman use?

Safety Hints

Wear approved safety equipment e.g. Ear Muffs & Goggles/Glasses

Start the tool prior to the blade making contact with the work

Keep the shoe firm and square to the work at all times
