Rangehoods

  • Clean filters regularly and vent the exhaust to outside your home.

  • Turn off the rangehood light when not needed.

  • Use the exhaust fan on the lowest speed.

Kitchen Water Use

  • Be sure to place the tap lever on the kitchen sink in the cold position when using small amounts of water; placing the lever in the hot position uses energy to heat the water even though it never reaches the tap.

  • Fix dripping taps, and install water saving devices like water saving aerators and tap flow regulators. Because heating water uses so much energy, saving water can give you big savings on your energy bill.

Fans

  • Turn off kitchen ventilating fans after they've done their job - these fans can blow out a house-full of heated air if inadvertently left on.

Dishwashers

  • High efficiency is only obtained when plates, glasses etc are placed in the dishwasher according to manufacturer instructions. Ensure nothing prevents the wash arms from rotating

  • Fill the dishwasher completely before operating. Partial loads waste water and electricity. Small load or half load options, short wash cycles, rinse-only cycles, and mid-cycle turn off are features designed for energy efficiency as well as convenience.

  • Use cold water when rinsing dishes or operating a garbage disposal unit.

Recycling

  • Use recycling services. Less energy is used to recycle aluminium, steel, paper and plastic than to produce them.
