Bathrooms need to be clean, fresh and bright in the mornings. In the evenings they need to create relaxed, quiet and intimate decor.

Afraid to look in the mirror every morning? Maybe it's because you're seeing yourself in bad light. Light naturally creates shadows ? and when you combine them with mirrors you need to be careful.

Lighting solution

A bathroom needs good general lighting of the interior as a whole, and local lighting for mirrors.

General lighting from luminaires installed in the ceiling can provide the basic background illumination. Adding side-mounted lights around the mirror for shaving or putting on make-up shall provide a bright, even light from both sides. This avoids casting deep shadows on the face that can occur if the light source is above the mirror.

Looking for opportunities to enhance atmosphere and mood, one can focus light on the objects most commonly found in a bathroom - water, glass, mirrors - and by using spotlights, you can create a wonderful sense of colour and space.

Safety considerations must be paramount in the bathroom. No switches inside the bathroom: Use only a cord-pull switch. Fittings should be steam- and splash-proof. Do consult a properly qualified electrician if you have any doubts. Some light fittings are waterproof, which can be very dramatic and stylish when placed inside a shower unit.
