Compact Fluorescent Lamps

  • These lamps combine some of the advantages of incandescent with some of the advantages of fluorescent

  • The method of making compact fluorescent lamps is to bend the linear tube into a more compact shape

  • The principals of operation are the same as a linear fluorescent lamp

  • They have an in-built electronic ballast and starter

















    Strengths

    • Economical

    • Excellent colour rendering with triphosphor lamps

    • Wide colour temperature range from warm to cool

    • Low operating temperature

    • Long to very long Life

    • Soft light

    Weaknesses

    • Require auxiliary equipment eg. magnetic or electronic ballast

    • Compact types are more expensive

    • Take time to reach full output

    • Certain types are not dimmable
