Compact Fluorescent Lamps
These lamps combine some of the advantages of incandescent with some of the advantages of fluorescent
The method of making compact fluorescent lamps is to bend the linear tube into a more compact shape
The principals of operation are the same as a linear fluorescent lamp
They have an in-built electronic ballast and starter
Strengths
- Economical
- Excellent colour rendering with triphosphor lamps
- Wide colour temperature range from warm to cool
- Low operating temperature
- Long to very long Life
- Soft light
Weaknesses
- Require auxiliary equipment eg. magnetic or electronic ballast
- Compact types are more expensive
- Take time to reach full output
- Certain types are not dimmable
