Always choose an open sunny site for growing fruit trees.
Prepare soil as follows:
Dig over well, break up soil to twice the depth of the spade.
Mix in, generous amounts of compost and rolled manure (cow).
Fork in deep, then add a handful of complete fertilizer to the square metre and fork in well.
Each tree needs its own stake - a $10 hole for a $5 tree - (twice as deep and wide as the container). The hole must be wide enough and deep enough for the roots not to be crammed.
Tie the tree loosely to the stake, keeping the bud union above the ground. Backfill in soil around roots and make sure no air pockets remain.
Firm the soil well - squashing out any air.
Water well to settle soil around the roots
Mulch well to keep moist and cool.
