Steel
page 1 of 1

Steel is termite proof and will not rot over time like timber, steel used in flooring is usually galvanised so if installed correctly should also not rust.

Not all builders are comfortable working with steel systems, though they are becoming more common in all avenues of the building industry.

There are three main types of steel flooring systems;

  • Prefabricated or site assembled ladder floor systems

  • Permanent steel formwork concrete floors

  • Bearer and joist or clearspan systems

Many developments have occurred in the clear span systems through the recent introduction of a system which incorporates adjustable steel posts instead of brick piers, the idea being that the height of the post can be adjusted on site - after the post is fixed in its footing - to achieve a level floor. In tandem with lightweight, high-strength steel bearers and joists, these systems allow for bigger spans - meaning less piers and more under-floor space.
