CEDAR

Characteristics of Cedar

Cedar has a fine grained cell structure, it is a stable species with the following advantages:

  • It is not subject to warping or twisting.

  • It has an inbuilt resistance to decay due to the presence of natural preservative oils and fungicidal compounds.

  • It accepts stains and paints readily due to its freedom from pitch, gum veins and other surface irregularities.

The dimensional stability and fine grain characteristics reduce the effects of cracking on surface finishes caused by shrinkage and swelling in some other species.
Surface Finishing

In order for cedar to maintain its moulded/sanded colour, it is necessary to protect it from the effects of ultra-violet in the sun's rays and from pollutants in the atmosphere.

Unfinished cedar will change from the natural dark or light brown to a silver grey and on to a very dark to black finish, the extent of this black finish will be related to the level of pollution in the atmosphere and the elevation of the product to the weather.

Surface finishing is recommended in order to:

  • Prevent the ingress of moisture into the timber and into joints, glazing areas etc.

  • Protect, maintain and extend the life of the product. Improve the appearance.

Surface Finishes

In order to obtain a reasonable life with external finishes, it is necessary to correctly apply, according to the Manufacturer's instructions, good quality semi-transparent or opaque finishes- (for details refer to notes on surface finishing and care of cedar products).

Note: Clear finishes should only be used internally where the product is protected from sunlight (ultra voilet).

Appearance

Cedar is a naturally grown product and as a result is subject to wide variation in natural colours, varying from very light brown to very dark brown (almost black). In some instances the application of semi-clear finishes will accentuate colour variations.

Cedar is a beautiful timber, it has a richness and warmth which compliments the majority of surrounding materials.
