Building with Blocks

Concrete blocks are a very cost effective way of building. While a single block may cost more to buy & lay than a single brick, you use far fewer blocks than bricks. In fact, just 1 Block is equal to 8 bricks in a double brick wall! Cost your house using Block and using Brick. You will be absolutely amazed at how much you will save simply by using Blocks.

Building with blocks is relatively easy if you follow the few simple guidelines below.

Window Sizes

Window sizes should be ordered to suit blockwork. This will allow you to use standard size blocks which will save you both time and money. To work out window sizes use the following;

Windows Width should always be in modules of 200mm plus 10mm. Example - 410mm, 610mm, 810mm, lOlOmm, 1210mm and so on.

Window Height should also be in modules of 200mm plus lOmm. However, you must remember to allow for the height of the sill block which is 100mm. Example - 510mm, 710mm, 910mm, 1110mm, 1310mm and so on.

Expansion Joints Expansion joints must be included to allow for expansion and contraction due to seasonal temperature changes and ground movement. Expansion joins should be placed no more than 6m apart unless advised otherwise by a qualified engineer.

Water Proofer - It is important that a water proofing compound like Aquapaste is added to EVERY mix of mortar, using the recommended ratios as listed on the drum.

Failure to ensure that the blocklayers adhere strictly to this can result in joints that are not totally weatherproof.

Krimplock - Block reinforcement wire should be laid in the mortar every 3rd course (600mm apart). This ties the blockwork together, helping to prevent cracking. The reinforcement comes in 3.5m lengths. To join 2 lengths, simply overlap the ends by 30Omm.

Weep Holes - Weep holes should be placed in every perpendicular joint just above the damp coarse or the slab rebate.

Sealer - It is strongly recommend that all surfaces that are exposed to the weather are sprayed with an approved waterproofer or paint, after the blocks have been cleaned down.

Bondbeams & Roof Tie Downs - Full bond beam reinforcement & roof tie down details are available upon placement of order.

Insulation

Concrete blocks have very good insulation properties. The density of the block allows it to retain warmth in the colder months, while resisting the harsh outdoors climate in the hotter months. Concrete blocks are very effective at blocking out unwanted traffic and industrial noise, keeping the interior of your house quiet and peaceful.

Speed of construction

Blocks come in a full range of sizes, 90, 140, 190 and 290 mm thick, in halves, quarters, three quarters, bond beams, window blocks and more. This means quick and easy construction with no messing around cutting things to fit. Quick & easy construction = Lower construction costs for you.

Strength

Concrete Blocks are naturally strong. They are load bearing to minimum of 12 MPa (Grade 12). They are also able to be reinforced easily & cheaply for areas of very high wind loadings, or earthquake zones. Concrete blocks are naturally fire, termite, and white ant resistant without the use of any messy or toxic chemicals.

Low Maintenance

By their very nature Concrete blocks are very low maintenance. They don't get attacked by Termites or White Ants, They Don't Rot, Rust or Warp. The colourings used in the blocks are natural Oxides and never need painting. Maintenance of concrete block walls is basically limited to just hosing them down with the garden hose if they look dusty.
